General information on paediatric chiropractic care
19 June 2024Healthy pregnancy → Healthy baby
Pregnancy is a time of many changes for women:
- major hormonal changes
- increased tension in many muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc;
- weight gain
All these changes can be painful, ranging from lower back or groin pain to paralysing sciatica.
There are simple chiropractic techniques to prevent or treat these problems.
It’s important to understand that if you have lower back pain, you’re bound to have tension in the pelvic and perineal muscles, which will inevitably interfere with the correct positioning of your ‘baby’, and make your delivery much more difficult, painful and long. There are many repercussions for the foetus. Chiropractic care is very important during this period in order to treat you, relieve your pain and eliminate abnormal tension in the pelvis and uterus, and therefore in your baby, so that it can develop under ideal conditions. It will also enable you to have a much shorter and less traumatic birth for your baby.
Supporting evidence
Regular chiropractic care during pregnancy can significantly reduce labour time and all the pain associated with pregnancy, as we regularly see in our practices and as these two studies show.
For women receiving chiropractic care during pregnancy, labour time during childbirth was reduced by an average of 24% compared with a group of women not receiving chiropractic care. Fallon J., “the effect of chiropractic treatment on pregnancy and labor: a comprehensive study” 1991
84% of patients who received chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy reported relief of lower back pain. They also experienced less back pain during contractions when chiropractic care was followed during pregnancy.
