20 June 2024Congenital torticollis is caused either by a malpositioned foetus in the mother’s womb or, for the most part, by childbirth, even if it went “very well”. The forces exerted on the baby’s head and cervical spine are always enormous (much more so with forceps, suction cups, etc.), and can create vertebral subluxations, haematomas in the neck muscles, etc. The gynaecologist or midwife will do their best to get your baby out, but sometimes have to go beyond physiological limits to do so. It is very important to act as quickly as possible.
If caught early, this condition is easily treated with chiropractic care. The longer you wait, the more your chances of success are compromised.
Studies on congenital torticollis
A retrospective analysis of children with congenital torticollis receiving chiropractic care. Joel Alcantara, Rosemary E. Oman, Gian Joerger. ICPA, Media,PA, USA. July 9-12, 2004.
This study involved 25 children with congenital torticollis, with an average age of 4 and a half months. 15 were referred by paediatricians, 6 by parents and 3 by nurses. 5 children had received unsuccessful medical treatment. 1 child was diagnosed with Russel Silver syndrome. The other 24 were completely cured with an average of less than 5 visits. The results show the effectiveness of very specific “high velocity low amplitude” chiropractic adjustments.
