Sciatica
20 June 2024Cervicobrachial neuralgia
20 June 2024It is estimated that a quarter of the population suffers from headaches on a regular basis. Under no circumstances should these pains be taken lightly. In fact, even if the vast majority of headaches have a vertebral origin (as we will see later), they can also indicate the presence of more serious problems such as high blood pressure, visual or neurological problems or a brain tumour… Your doctor of Chiropractic will rule out serious illnesses (if necessary by referring you to a specialist), and will treat you effectively.
There are two main categories of headaches: tension headaches and migraines.
Tension headaches
These are the most common. They are caused by abnormal muscular tension in the cervical spine and skull, often developed by a combination of factors: poor posture at work (computer, progressive glasses, etc.), falls, accidents, stress, etc.
Migraines
These are often the most painful. They often affect only one side of the head and are often exacerbated by light. It can lead to nausea and vomiting. Migraines are caused by constriction of the blood vessels in the head, which dilate to trigger the pain. Although there may be a hereditary factor, migraines should never be considered normal and should be treated.
Migraines are often mistakenly thought to be linked to factors such as liver problems, menstruation or certain foods, when in fact these only exacerbate an underlying problem. Migraine sufferers frequently have a spinal disorder affecting the part of the nervous system that controls the function of the blood vessels in the skull.
In all cases, taking medication merely numbs the pain without addressing the root of the problem. Not to mention the fact that they can have numerous side effects.
The chiropractor will try to find the cause (which is very often possible) of your headaches or migraines, and will treat and stabilise them over time.
